As an international institution preparing students to take an active role in an international society, the university places a high value on the acquisition of foreign languages. Foremost of these is English, in which all students are expected to achieve intermediate level in both speaking and reading. To facilitate this, UCU regularly invites visiting professors who teach a variety of subjects in English. In addition, the university library has approximately 30,000 volumes in English. One of the aims of the curriculum is to use the university’s resources to prepare students for professional careers and graduate education abroad.
General English is required during the first three years of studies. This prepares students for elective courses in the fourth and fifth years of study such as Academic English, TOEFL Preparation and English Academic Writing.
Perhaps the most successful component of the curriculum is the English Summer School. Held annually in a scenic location, the summer school hosts 25 native English speakers from abroad for a month of intensive classes and activities. This total-immersion program helps students improve their confidence and communicative competence in English.
German, French, and Italian are offered as second foreign language choices. Students are required to complete 210 hours of classroom instruction in the third, fourth and fifth years of study. Additionally, there is a number of study opportunities during the summer semester.
